Spring Garden 2012

Well, this year the weather is very weird. Usually in this part of Georgia we have a little snow or at least some ice and lots of freezing nights. This year we haven’t had any of that! It’s so weird. The warm weather really gets you in the mood for gardening though!

My seedlings are in the ground now and more seeds are sprouting inside my sun room. So far I have Sugar Snap Peas, Asian Cabbage, and Cauliflower in the ground. Oh…and garlic. I still need to get the carrots, lettuce, spinach, onions, and broccoli in the ground. Some of them have been started in seed trays inside, but things like carrots are better just planted straight into the ground.

We had a lot of fun getting the boxes and dirt ready. We actually need more dirt. I have had to start all over this year because we just moved to this house! My husband didn’t want to move our dirt, so we had to buy new dirt! 🙂 We also built a fence around our garden with some poultry fencing to keep the dogs from digging…and later the chickens from eating the garden!

I’m very excited to have this spring garden. I have never had one before. I usually wait until April/May to plant for a summer/fall crop. I am really trying to increase the production of my garden and think of it as our supply for our food and not just a fun hobby! I guess I’ll be learning a lot about preserving and canning this summer too!

Sore-Cold-Tired

Well, despite the big plans I had for myself this week, I didn’t get much done. It wasn’t really my fault though. See a week ago I pulled something in my shoulder/neck and it still isn’t better. I woke up one day and just couldn’t move! I’ve had whiplash before, so I kinda knew what to expect. Basically all I could do was rest. There are certainly times that I look forward to a good excuse to be completely lazy, but after a few days I was just plain bored…and tired of sitting around. Each day showed an improvement, but I was still in a lot of pain. Nothing a good dose of pain pills won’t cure! But even taking pain pills, it hurt. They did help enough that I could get up and around. There was so much I wanted to get done this week, but all I could do was sit here in my favorite spot on the couch. It’s been over a week and the muscles in my shoulder are MUCH better, but still not healed. Sleeping is the worst. I can’t move around, I’m in pain all night, and when I finally get out of bed I can’t move much at all.

To top all that off, I caught a cold. **How did that happen anyway? I’ve been in this same spot on the couch all week!**

Needless to say, I didn’t get everything done I had planned. I REALLY needed some bone broth to help me feel better…but that didn’t get done at all. I haven’t been able to drive (luckily my wonderful husband is here and a huge help!) so I’ve been sitting here thinking of all the great benefits of bone broth. 🙂

The seeds had to be done and I figured I could at least do that. Due to the fact that I haven’t been sleeping well, on pain pills, and sore…I totally messed up some of my seeds. I planted some seeds inside that should have waited to be planted outside. Oh well…we will see how they do. I planted everything in those jiffy seed pod things so they don’t have to actually be transplanted. The entire little pot they are in goes directly into the ground. Maybe since the roots won’t be disturbed they will do okay! ?

I put them on a nice rack that I stole from the garage. I have 2 heating pads (that I should be using for my shoulder) and put them under the seed trays. I keep them on “low” and rotate my seed trays so they all get their fair share.

It’s been 2-3 days and the sugar snap peas (which should have been directly planted in the ground) are already starting to sprout! Later I will do a blog just on my seeds and planting plans. But for now, I wanted to at least show you my little seedlings!

Maybe next time I will report on bone broth. 🙂 In the meantime I will continue planting my seeds and brushing with my homemade toothpaste!

Precept upon Precept – Healthy Living


For years I have been learning about healthy ways to live. I think we all have. The internet makes research easy, but sometimes it’s just too much information at one time. I’m a natural researcher, so I love digging deeper to learn something more. But many times I just spend all my time learning and not doing! I believe the book of James warns us about being hearers of the word but not doers! The “doing” is the hard part. I can sit here all day long and learn more and more about something interesting, but if I never put any of my learning to use…what good is it?

With a new year beginning, I am making a goal to start with some baby steps toward healthier living. I call it “Precept Upon Precept.” The Bible tells us that by building something slowly, and one step at a time (precept upon precept), we will build something that lasts. I was also inspired by another blog: KeeperoftheHome

So what are my steps? Well, some ideas are recipes, gardening, fresh eggs, home remedies, cooking from scratch, homemade cleaners.

I have already started a few things.

Precept 1: Gardening – Every year I plant a garden and it’s slowly growing each year. Growing fresh produce is a great way to have farm fresh food at your table. I have been able to grow a much larger garden with MUCH less effort by using the All New Square Foot Gardening
method. I will post more about that through the year.

Precept 2: Fresh Free Range Eggs

I will be raising egg-laying hens this year! I have never had chickens before, so this will be a new experience, but with some help from some wonderful friends, I know it will be a great experience!

So, what next? Homemade Toothpaste

I have a husband and a daughter who have issues with cavities. I never had a cavity in my life…although I think I might have a teeny tiny spot on one tooth now. Maybe from deficiencies during pregnancies? My son has inherited my resistance to cavities too. But for my husband and my daughter, frequent dental visits and cavity fillings are a way of life. I was told that they just have weak enamel and that they were born this way…that there is nothing we can do. The dentist recently prescribed my daughter prescription strength fluoride toothpaste! I was not happy. I never bought into the idea that fluoride was needed for us to have healthy teeth. So shoving more fluoride down my daughters mouth didn’t sound right to me! I’ve been researching it and found that fluoride is not what “they” say it is. But what can we use to brush our teeth?

I found the following recipe that I loved. It uses ingredients that I either had in my house, or could get at the local grocery store! First I will share my thoughts about it.

The cons:
* My daughter doesn’t like the coconut flavor! I will be trying it with the peppermint oil and making it again (I left this out the first time) and hopefully that will help hide the coconut oil flavor a little bit.
* It doesn’t seem to do much for bad breath. I will be looking for something I can rinse with to kill off bad breath germs.

The pros:
*Easy to get ingredients and VERY easy to make. It literally takes less than 1 minute to mix up in your kitchen!
*It’s healthy. It’s the only toothpaste I’ve ever had that I could eat with a spoon without any side effects! It’s so good I sometimes want to spread it on toast!

Stevia leaves and stevioside are virtually calorie-free, beneficial in the prevention of cavities and do not trigger a rise in blood sugar.

So while I’m still on a mission to find the right combination that my children will use (without the coconut flavor), I am at least much closer to getting rid of the store bought toothpaste! And I use the homemade stuff everyday and love it!

Here is how I made my homemade toothpaste:


2 tablespoons coconut oil (extra virgin from the farmers market)
3 tablespoons baking soda (make sure you don’t use baking powder!)
1/2 small packet of stevia powder (I used 2-3 small packets since I didn’t use the peppermint…it needed more sweetener)
20-25 drops of peppermint oil (essential oil not extract)

Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl, using a fork.

Read the original blog to see pages of comments left by readers. I learned so much by reading through the comments! Another thing I might try is to replace the Stevia with Xylitol. You can search to read the benefits of Xylitol. Like Stevia it has anti-cavity properties, but many people feel it’s even better.

I am also doing some research on Bone Broth and it’s wonderful health benefits…one of those being improving the health of your teeth! You can read here about bone broth and other tooth friendly foods!

My goal this week:

*Experiment with flavors for the coconut oil toothpaste so the kids will like it and use it.
*Find some healthy mouthwash that will kill bad breath germs (is Listerine safe?)
*Make one big batch of bone broth to drink/eat to help aid our overall health and especially our dental health. Here is a link to an easy bone broth recipe based on the Nourishing Traditions book Nourishing Traditions.

That’s a lot to work on I guess. This week is busy because I have to get some seeds started indoors for the garden too. I’m so excited to share about all the changes I want to start making. I am really holding myself back though. I want to take things slow so they become part of my routine (a habit) and don’t just go away as quickly as they appeared! So…new toothpaste, start the garden, and make some bone broth! That’s a good start for now!
